Gas Hot Water Systems

Gas storage and continuous flow hot water — repairs, servicing, replacement and installation. All gas work is carried out under gas licence L25976.

Two different systems, two different faults

“Gas hot water” covers two quite different setups, and knowing which one you have changes the conversation entirely.

A gas storage system keeps a tank of water hot, much like an electric system, but heats it with a burner underneath instead of an element inside. A continuous flow unit (also called instantaneous) holds no water at all — it fires only when you open a hot tap and heats the water as it passes through.

Storage systems tend to fail the way tanks fail: burner and ignition problems, thermocouples, valves, and eventually the tank itself. Continuous flow units are more electronic, so their faults skew towards ignition, flow sensors, water flow rate and error codes on the controller.

What we do with gas systems

Advance Hotwater repairs, services, replaces and installs both types. Gas work is carried out under gas licence L25976 alongside plumbing licence PD23831.

If you have a continuous flow unit showing an error code, note the code down before you call. It won’t give us the whole answer, but it’s a useful starting point.

What we do

Gas hot water repairs, servicing and installation

Ignition and burner faults

The unit not firing, firing intermittently, or dropping out partway through a shower. Common on both storage and continuous flow.

Continuous flow error codes

Units that lock out and display a fault code. We read the code, then check what it actually points to on that model.

Temperature problems

Water not getting hot, running too hot, or swinging between the two — which can be the unit, a tempering valve or the way the system is set up.

Replacement and new installation

Supply and installation of a replacement gas system, or a new one, under gas licence L25976 and plumbing licence PD23831.

Common faults

What usually goes wrong

These are the symptoms we hear about most often. A good starting point for the call.

  • No hot water from a gas system
  • Unit not igniting or igniting intermittently
  • Hot water goes cold partway through a shower
  • Error code showing on a continuous flow unit
  • Water only lukewarm no matter the setting
  • Leaking from the unit or its connections
  • Pilot light won’t stay lit on an older system
  • Noisy operation or unusual smells

Please don’t troubleshoot it yourself. Hot water systems combine electricity, gas, stored pressure and water hot enough to scald. If something looks, smells or sounds wrong, turn it off if it’s safe to do so and call (07) 3801 2155.

If you can smell gas, stop and act on it

Don’t use switches or naked flames. If it’s safe to do so, turn the gas off at the meter or bottle, open up the area to fresh air, and get everyone out. Contact your gas supplier’s emergency line or emergency services first — then call us about the system itself once the immediate situation is dealt with.

Gas work is licensed work. Once the immediate situation is handled, call (07) 3801 2155 and we’ll look at the system.

FAQs

Common questions

Do you work on continuous flow (instantaneous) gas systems?
Yes — both continuous flow and gas storage systems.
My gas hot water goes cold halfway through a shower. Why?
Several things can cause it — ignition, flow, the unit’s settings, or the way the plumbing runs. Worth investigating properly before guessing.
Are you licensed for gas work?
Yes. Gas licence L25976, alongside QBCC licence 1204307 and plumbing licence PD23831. All three numbers are published on this site.
Can I switch from gas to electric or a heat pump?
It’s possible, and sometimes sensible. It depends on your property, where the existing unit sits and what services are already there. Give us a call and we’ll talk it through.
What should I have ready before I call about a gas system?
Whether it’s storage or continuous flow, the brand, and any error code showing on the controller. A photo of the unit and its data plate helps.

Gas hot water not behaving?

Have the brand and any error code handy and give us a call.
