Hot Water System Installation & Replacement

When a system has reached the end, replacing it properly matters more than replacing it fast. Supply and installation of electric, solar, gas and heat pump hot water systems.

Replacing like for like isn’t automatic

The default when a hot water system dies is to put the same thing back. Often that’s exactly right — the connections are there, the space suits it, and the household is happy with how it performed.

But it’s worth at least asking the question. Households change. A system that was right for two people may not be right for five. If your electric system has been running out every evening for years, replacing it with an identical unit repeats the problem. If a heat pump would suit your place and your usage, that’s worth knowing before you commit, not after.

We’ll tell you what fits your situation, including when the answer is “the same again, that was fine”.

What goes into a proper installation

A hot water installation is more than lifting the old one out. It covers the water connections, the relief and tempering valves, the drain line, the base or mounting, and — depending on the system type — the electrical connection or gas connection. Solar adds the collectors and circulation. Heat pumps add ventilation and placement considerations.

All of it’s licensed work. Advance Hotwater holds QBCC licence 1204307, plumbing licence PD23831 and gas licence L25976.

Removing the old system

The old unit has to come out and be disposed of properly, and the new one has to sit correctly with the right clearances and drainage. Unglamorous detail — and the part that determines whether the new system gives you trouble in three years.

What we do

Hot water system installation and replacement

Sizing and system choice

A conversation about household size and hot water habits before choosing, instead of defaulting to whatever was there.

Licensed connection work

Water, electrical and gas connections handled under the relevant licences, with old units removed and disposed of.

Common faults

What usually goes wrong

These are the symptoms we hear about most often. A good starting point for the call.

  • Tank has corroded and is leaking
  • System is old and repairs no longer stack up
  • Parts no longer available for the model
  • System never kept up with the household
  • Renovating or relocating the unit
  • Changing from one system type to another
  • Bought a home with a failing system
  • Wanting the job done before the old one dies

Please don’t troubleshoot it yourself. Hot water systems combine electricity, gas, stored pressure and water hot enough to scald. If something looks, smells or sounds wrong, turn it off if it’s safe to do so and call (07) 3801 2155.

Choosing a system

What actually drives the decision

There’s no single best hot water system. There’s a system that suits your household, your property and the services already connected to it.

Household size

How many people, and how much hot water gets used at once. The biggest single factor in getting the sizing right.

What’s already there

Existing electrical supply, gas connection, roof access and the space the unit sits in all shape what is practical.

Where it can go

Heat pumps need airflow. Solar needs suitable roof orientation. Gas needs ventilation and clearances. Placement isn’t an afterthought.

Running cost

Different system types cost different amounts to run. We’ll explain the differences for the options that suit your place.

FAQs

Common questions

How long does a hot water system replacement take?
A straightforward like-for-like changeover is quicker than changing system type, relocating the unit or adding a gas or electrical connection. We’ll give you a realistic picture once we’ve seen what’s involved.
Will I be without hot water?
There’s a period without hot water while the changeover happens, then time for the new system to heat up. We’ll tell you what to expect for your job.
Do you take the old system away?
Yes, the old unit is removed and disposed of as part of the job.
Can you install a system I’ve bought myself?
Talk to us before you buy. Worth checking first: suitability for the location, what the installation would involve, and how the manufacturer warranty is affected by who installs it.
What warranty comes with a new system?
Warranty terms come from the manufacturer and vary by system and model. We’ll point you to the warranty documentation for the unit you’re getting.
